CCUS technology: BV's white paper available now

Dec. 5 2022

Bureau Veritas’ white paper, “CCUS and the path to Net Zero”, is now available for download. It outlines the potential of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technology, and explores its challenges, particularly regarding safety and environmental impact.

As global efforts are being made to reduce CO2 emissions – a major contributor to the global warming – CCUS technology has a pivotal role to play in meeting net zero targets. According to the International Energy Agency’s Net Zero by 2050 plan, CCUS is the technology that will have the most impact on emissions reductions. It estimates that CCUS will account for 55% of reductions by 2050.

CCUS technology captures emissions, keep them out of the atmosphere and safely sequester them for the long term, or possibly for future use. However, this cutting-edge solution does come with challenges inherent to the specific technical nature of operations and the long timespan that CO2 must be sequestrated in reservoirs. Safely capturing and sequestering CO2 requires specialized, scalable technologies that can adapt to the needs of operators in all industries. In addition, environmental safeguards coupled with regular monitoring must be in place to provide confidence in the amount of carbon captured and injected into a well for long-term sustainable carbon sequestration.

Bureau Veritas supports companies across the entire carbon value chain thanks to its end-to-end solutions. Upstream, the Group’s expertise enables CCUS projects to run smoothly and optimally. At the transportation stage, BV’s modular approach ensures compliance with applicable legislation and specific project requirements, including assessment of injection sites. Meanwhile, operators downstream that need assistance in locating and certifying long-term storage reservoirs can rely on Bureau Veritas’ certification-based framework. It covers all necessary stages, from feasibility assessment with Approval in Principle, to project certification with site appraisal, to design assessment and monitoring, and finally post-closure certification.
