Guide for Certification of freight Containers: Bureau Veritas publishes his new version

11 déc. 2015

Bureau Veritas, global leader in compliance evaluation and certification services, is publishing the new version of his international guide aimed at ensuring the safety and compliance to international regulations of containers used for the international intermodal transport of goods.

During the 1970s container shipping expanded dramatically and ports were established in every continent in the world. This was the beginning of the expansion that made container shipping the backbone of global trade.

Today there are container ports all over the world whether countries manufacture goods for export or import goods from other countries.

The equivalent of about 141 million loaded twenty-foot containers moved across the oceans. There are well over 4 000 container ships afloat in the world. The largest ones are 400m long and can carry about 11 000 twenty foot containers.

And now about 80 % of the world’s manufactured goods are transported in containers.

Since the beginning Bureau Veritas has been actively participating to the development of the container industry as a key partner in charge to assess the safety and the compliance of containers.

The first edition of the rules for the certification and inspection of containers was published by Bureau Veritas in 1968 (NI 140) and since has been updated several times.

The Rules, formulated with aid of the industry, laid down the basis requirements for the construction of containers intended for the intermodal transport of goods.

The Rules also defined the applicable requirements for the approval of new containers by design type and for the survey of individual production units.

Responding to the needs of the industry, Bureau Veritas has constantly monitored the changes and new developments in view of deciding on their incorporation to this guide.

The present edition incorporates most of the requests from the intermodal container industry, and of the container owners, shipping lines and leasing companies.
