Challenges
The EU Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR), enforced on June 29, 2023, aims to stop deforestation, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and control agriculture led deforestation and land degradation caused by European consumers’ purchasing pattern. This regulation imposes stringent due diligence, traceability, and compliance mandates on companies importing or trading in scope commodities, requiring comprehensive actions to comply and showcase sustainability commitments.
The EUDR sets liability on EU importers and traders to demonstrate verifiable data proving the commodities are from deforestation-free sources and produced in accordance with local laws, local communities and land use permits. Importers and traders within the EU must comply with the new rules by December 30, 2025, as the EUDR repeals the EU Timber Regulation.
