Sectors:
- Bureau Veritas Fuels supports the entire transport industry worldwide. This includes the aviation, maritime, road transport, rail, and logistics & supply chain sectors.
Challenges
The European Union has mandated ambitious targets to curb carbon emissions by 55% before 2030 and attain net zero emissions by 2050. Rapidly evolving fuel technologies, such as hydrogen, synthetic fuels, and e-fuels, present exciting opportunities to decarbonize; however, they also introduce new risks and challenges for the transportation sector. For instance, companies must remain abreast of evolving regulations across various jurisdictions to ensure compliance across international borders. Furthermore, any inaccuracies in the verification process could potentially erode stakeholder trust and confidence.
Independent testing, inspection, and certification solutions for biofuels and renewable fuels with Bureau Veritas can assist stakeholders across maritime, aviation, and transportation with adoption of sustainable fuels without comprising on operational efficiency or profitability.
Critical use case
In 2024, Bureau Veritas Fuels advanced the maritime industry's decarbonization efforts by offering inspection and analytical services for a new type of biofuel for the first time.
Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) is a biodiesel derived from cooking oils used. When blended with conventional diesel fuel, it can help reduce overall carbon emissions. However, FAME can leave residues in engines or fuel systems, causing technical problems.
That’s why we developed services to help clients mitigate these risks.
Our Impact:
At Bureau Veritas, we have been offering comprehensive fuel inspection and analytical services to support the transportation industry's transition to lower-carbon fuels for over a decade.
In the aviation industry, we test and verify Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) produced from renewable and low-carbon sources, including biomass and waste. We also recently published a white paper evaluating different test methods to determine how to optimize and produce the highest quality sustainable aviation fuel. Its aim was to provide independent guidance for both private companies and governments as they develop their own SAF programs.
These services all facilitate the transportation sector's transition towards more sustainable, lower-carbon fuel options.
