From Commitments To Measurable Outcomes: How Business Leaders Are Prioritizing Sustainability Globally

Sep. 28 2026

In a dynamic global business landscape, the need to integrate sustainability into business strategy has never been higher. Driven by complex regulatory requirements, rising investors and consumer expectations, and operational risks; today, sustainability is not merely limited to achieving regulatory compliance but has become a strategic need.

Bureau Veritas conducted a survey across 600+ respondents in five regions including Europe, Asia, Asia-Pacific, America, and Africa to identify Sustainability Trends for 2026. Leaders shared their perspectives on today’s sustainability challenges, outlining evolving priorities and the complexities of decision-making in a rapidly changing landscape.

The report underscores the growing imperative for organizations to embed sustainability into core business operations; to not only remain competitive in an increasingly volatile market, but also to strengthen brand trust and long-term resilience.

Notably, 58% of organizations anticipate that sustainability will become even more critical over the next three years, signaling a clear shift from ambition to strategic necessity.

Sustainability: A boardroom priority

Closing the Gap Between Strategy and Execution The C-suite and management teams are taking ownership of sustainability strategies recognizing their direct impact on operational performance, investor expectations, and risk mitigation. As sustainability moves from the periphery to the core of business strategy, alignment at the leadership level has become essential. Strong consensus among decision-makers not only enables faster, more confident decisions, but also accelerates the implementation of sustainability initiatives at scale.

This shift is evident in investment governance, with 74% of respondents indicating that CEOs or management teams hold final decision-making authority on sustainability investments. Organizations that successfully embed sustainability into their business models are better positioned to attract capital, strengthen stakeholder confidence, and build long-term competitive advantage. Areas of strongest alignment among decision-makers include:

  • High consensus on ESG, climate, and carbon priorities, enabling faster rollout of high-impact initiatives.

  • Accelerated deployment of key programmes, including climate disclosure, carbon reduction strategies, and ESG data assurance.

  • A sharper focus on measurable outcomes, ensuring organizations deliver tangible progress on the most critical sustainability challenges – decarbonization, supply chain.

Together, these priorities signal a maturing sustainability agenda - one that is increasingly strategic, integrated, and business-critical.

Closing the Gap Between Strategy and Execution

Closing the Gap Between Strategy and ExecutionAs sustainability priorities sharpen, organizations are increasingly focused on translating ambition into measurable impact. Yet, a persistent challenge lies in the ability to effectively capture, manage, and act on sustainability data. Many businesses continue to rely on fragmented systems and manual processes, limiting both efficiency and accuracy.
Reflecting this, 44% of respondents identified the collection, monitoring, and reporting of environmental and social data as top investment priority.

Forward-looking organizations are addressing this barrier by adopting advanced ESG data platforms that enable automated data capture, real-time insights, and robust emissions tracking. These capabilities not only strengthen reporting credibility but also enhance decision-making, reduce risk, and build stakeholder confidence.

At the same time, a clear maturity gap continues to shape the pace of progress. While large organizations are steadily embedding sustainability into core business processes, only 46% report full integration whereas smaller companies are still at an earlier stage, with only 12% achieving similar alignment. This gap is further compounded by constraints such as limited budgets, regulatory uncertainty, and a lack of in-house expertise. As a result, the ability to operationalize sustainability strategies remains uneven across the market.

To bridge this divide, organizations are increasingly turning to structured frameworks and external assurance. Audits and certification services are playing a pivotal role in transforming sustainability commitments into credible, verifiable outcomes. By supporting gap assessments, strengthening supply chain traceability, and enabling third-party validation, these services help organizations navigate compliance requirements while enhancing operational performance and brand trust.

Together, improved data management, stronger governance, and the adoption of recognized standards are enabling businesses to move from fragmented efforts to integrated, outcome-driven sustainability strategies.
