Bureau Veritas supports North Sea CO2 transport milestone with Petrogas pipeline requalification
Jun. 23 2026
Bureau Veritas is pleased to announce it has successfully completed the assessment and requalification of the Petrogas pipeline for CO₂ transport. This marks an important step in the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) in the Dutch North Sea.
On 28 May 2026, following more than 1.5 years of study, technical review, and preparation, it was confirmed that the existing 20-inch pipeline between the Q1 block and the EVOS terminal can be adapted for CO₂ transport as part of the Abeona CCS project. This project focused on enabling CO2 transport and storage infrastructure in the Dutch North Sea by repurposing existing infrastructure.
This development is believed to be a first-of-its-kind requalification of an existing offshore North Sea oil pipeline for CO2 transport associated with a Dutch offshore CCS value chain. It represents a stepping stone for industrial decarbonisation in the Netherlands and particularly the Greater Amsterdam region. By repurposing existing offshore infrastructure, the project shows how legacy assets can be transformed to support the energy transition in a safe, efficient, and scalable way. Internationally and onshore in the Netherlands, repurposing of legacy oil and gas pipelines has been done prior, and safely operated onshore The Netherlands for more than a decade.
The assessment was carried out by Bureau Veritas as an independent and competent body under the Dutch mining framework. It supports Petrogas EP Netherlands B.V. in the requalification of the existing pipeline from hydrocarbon service to gaseous CO2 transport service.
The summary report concludes that, within the defined Initiation and Screening phase scope, no limiting conditions were identified that would prevent progression to the next phase of requalification.
The current assessment does not constitute final long-term operational certification. Further validation, execution-phase appraisal, commissioning approval, and a time-limited Certificate of Fitness will be required in next stages. Still, the completed assessment marks a major technical and regulatory step forward for both Petrogas and the Abeona CCS project.
Bureau Veritas contributed its appraisal, verification and risk-based technical expertise to projects that help shape a safer and more sustainable energy future. The Petrogas pipeline requalification shows how assurance, engineering judgement and collaboration can support practical pathways for decarbonising offshore and industrial infrastructure in the Netherlands.
“Bureau Veritas has supported Petrogas in this landmark pipeline requalification initiative. Requalifying existing offshore pipeline infrastructure for CO2 transport is a milestone for the Dutch North Sea and an important enabler for decarbonisation in the Netherlands, including the Greater Amsterdam industrial region” said Aleid de Savornin Lohman, project director of Abeona CCS.
