Operational Excellence in the Digital Age: Lessons from Manuela Heineck

Can you give us a quick introduction about yourself?

My name is Manuela Heineck, and I am currently the Business Transformation and Operational Performance Senior Manager at Bureau Veritas, based in Paris. With a background in chemical engineering and business administration, I have extensive international experience, having lived in the Czech Republic, Portugal, France, and of course, Brazil, my home country.

In my current role, I lead the global digital transformation of the Certification business, defining new operating models, implementing digital tools, and driving operational efficiency across 80+ countries. I also oversee performance initiatives, ensuring automation, more efficient tools and processes, cost savings, and improved user experience for our auditors, clients, and back-office teams.

I thrive in fast-paced environments, leveraging data-driven decision-making and cross-functional collaboration to drive impactful change.

Could you walk us through your career path?

My career has focused on business transformation, operational excellence, and digital innovation. I started in chemical engineering research and accreditation maintenance, where I developed strong analytical and compliance skills. At Bureau Veritas, I progressed from supporting accreditation and training auditors in Brazil to strategic roles in planning, operations, and performance management.

As Certification Operations Manager, I led a team optimizing processes for over 15,000 audit days annually. In 2018, I transitioned to the Global Service Line as Business Process Management & Digital Transformation Manager, where I drove the deployment of digital tools globally, enhancing automation and efficiency.

Now, as Business Transformation & Operational Performance Senior Manager, I lead the global digitalization of Certification, focusing on optimizing efficiency, improving user experience, and driving operational performance improvements through data-driven operations.

How would you describe your position and work in the Certification team at Bureau Veritas?

In my position, I lead the Business Transformation and Operational Performance within Bureau Veritas Certification Global Business Line. I oversee the digital transformation of our global Certification processes, working closely with teams to redesign and implement new technologies that drive efficiency, automation, and cost savings.

My role involves overseeing the front-office and back-office digitalization projects, defining new operating models, and ensuring smooth implementation through effective change management. I also engage with global stakeholders to monitor KPIs and ensure the continued operational performance of our Certification services.

What do you enjoy the most about working in Certification as Business Transformation & Operational Performance?

What excites me the most about my role is the opportunity to lead digital transformation initiatives that drive the growth and performance of the Certification business.

By implementing smarter, more efficient digital solutions, we enhance operational efficiency, optimize resources, and create a seamless experience for auditors, clients, and back-office teams.

I enjoy working at the intersection of technology and business strategy, collaborating with diverse teams to turn innovation into tangible results. Seeing how our initiatives contribute to Bureau Veritas' long-term success and industry leadership is very rewarding.

As we recently celebrated International Women's Day, could you share with us your perspective on progress in terms of gender equity in the market related to the Certification business?

The certification industry, like many others, has seen significant progress in gender equity, especially in leadership roles.

At Bureau Veritas, we have strong diversity initiatives, and I believe there is an increasing focus on providing equal opportunities for both men and women.

In the Certification business specifically, I've observed more women stepping into senior leadership positions, contributing unique perspectives, and driving positive change. While there's still more work to be done, I'm proud to be part of an organization that values gender equity and empowers women to thrive in leadership roles.

What would you say to other women considering this type of career?

Gender should never be a barrier; it's about bringing your expertise, determination, and vision to the table.

I would encourage women to embrace this career path if they have a passion for driving change and improving business performance. The certification and business transformation fields offer countless opportunities to make a tangible impact, and there is great potential to grow in leadership roles.

My advice would be to continuously develop your skills, be open to learning, and seek out mentors who can support your professional growth.
